Rabbi zidni 'ilma.
"My Lord, increase me in knowledge." (Quran 20:114)
Scholars note that this is the only thing Allah commanded the Prophet ﷺ to ask for more of. It is short enough to say before every lesson.
2. The dua of Prophet Musa for confidence
Rabbish-rah li sadri, wa yassir li amri, wahlul 'uqdatan min lisani, yafqahu qawli.
"My Lord, expand for me my chest, ease my task for me, and untie the knot from my tongue, so that they may understand my speech." (Quran 20:25–28)
Musa made this dua when Allah sent him to Pharaoh. It is ideal before an exam, an interview or a presentation.
3. Dua for ease in a difficult task
Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja'altahu sahla, wa anta taj'alul-hazna sahlan idha shi'ta.
"O Allah, nothing is easy except what You make easy, and You make the difficult easy if You will." (Sahih Ibn Hibban 974)
4. Dua for beneficial knowledge
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbala.
"O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision and accepted deeds." (Sunan Ibn Majah 925)
The Prophet ﷺ used to say this after the Fajr prayer, which makes it a perfect start to a revision day.
5. When exam nerves take over
Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-wakil.
"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." (Quran 3:173)
Islamic tips for studying well
- Start with Bismillah and a sincere intention: study to benefit yourself, your family and the Ummah.
- Study after Fajr. The early morning is a blessed, quiet time when the mind is fresh.
- Use short sessions of 25 to 45 minutes with breaks. Use the breaks for wudu, water or a short walk.
- Protect your prayers. Plan revision around salah, not the other way round.
- Sleep well. Pulling all-nighters harms memory. Recite Ayatul Kursi and sleep early.
- Avoid sins and distractions. Many scholars linked a clear heart to a clear memory.
- Do your best, then trust Allah with the result.
