How to Complete the Quran in Ramadan: A Simple Khatm Plan

Ramadan is the month of the Quran. Many Muslims set the goal of completing a full reading (a khatm) during the month, but find themselves far behind by the second week. The secret is a simple plan and a habit that starts before Ramadan. With Ramadan 2027 expected to begin around 8 February (subject to the moon sighting), now is the perfect time to start.

Why read the Quran in Ramadan?

The Prophet ﷺ revised the Quran every Ramadan. Ibn 'Abbas reported: "Gabriel used to meet him every night of Ramadan to teach him the Qur'an." (Sahih al-Bukhari 6)

Every letter is rewarded. 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud reported that the Prophet ﷺ said that whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah receives a reward for it, "and the reward of ten the like of it" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2910, graded hasan by Darussalam).

    How long is the Quran?

The Quran is divided into 30 juz' (parts). In the standard 15-line Madinah Mushaf it has 604 pages, which works out at about 20 pages per juz'. Page counts differ in other Mushafs, such as the 13-line and 16-line Indo-Pak editions, so check your own copy. Not sure which Mushaf suits you? See Which Mushaf should I use?

Three Ramadan plans (based on the 604-page Madinah Mushaf)

Plan Goal Pages per day Easy way to do it
Beginner Half the Quran About 10 2 pages after each of the five prayers
Standard One full khatm About 20 (1 juz') 4 pages after each of the five prayers
Advanced Two khatms About 40 (2 juz') 8 pages after each prayer, or 1 juz' in the morning and 1 at night

Ramadan has 29 or 30 days. If you follow the standard plan and the month has 29 days, you will need to read one extra juz' on one day, so build in a "catch-up day" each week.

    Start the habit now: a pre-Ramadan build-up

Jumping from no reading to 20 pages a day is hard. Build up gradually instead:

    1. Weeks 1 to 4: read 2 pages a day, at the same time each day (for example, after Fajr).
    2. Weeks 5 to 8: increase to 5 pages a day.
    3. Weeks 9 to 12: increase to 10 pages a day, spread across two prayers.
    4. The last weeks before Ramadan: try a few days at 20 pages, so you know how long a juz' takes you.

Consistency matters more than speed. The Prophet ﷺ said that "the most beloved deed to Allah is the most regular and constant even if it were little" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6464).

Do not rush: quality over quantity

A khatm is a beautiful goal, but the Quran is meant to be understood and lived. When 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr wanted to recite more, the Prophet ﷺ first told him: "Recite the whole Qur'an in one month's time." When he said he could do more, the Prophet ﷺ said: "Then finish the recitation of the Qur'an in seven days, and do not finish it in less than this period." (Sahih al-Bukhari 5054)

If your Arabic reading is still slow, it is far better to read less with correct pronunciation than to rush and make mistakes. You can:

    • Use a colour-coded Tajweed Quran so the rules are shown as you read. See how to read a colour-coded Tajweed Quran.
    • Read a translation alongside one or two pages a day, so you understand what you are reciting.
    • Listen while you follow along with a reciter, which helps both pronunciation and speed.

    Practical tips for busy days

    • Keep the Mushaf where you pray, so reading straight after Salah becomes automatic.
    • Use a bookmark or tracker and tick off each juz'.
    • Read on your commute with a Quran PDF on your phone.
    • Read with your family: one page each after Maghrib adds up quickly.
    • If you fall behind, do not give up. Add a page or two to each sitting until you catch up.
